The American Planning Association named Hillcrest, a top neighborhood in 2007, due to its overall diverse community flavor and revitalization of its uptown area. Hillcrest is located north of Balboa Park and is known for ethnic dining, boutiques and antique shops plus great salons and spas. Every summer the neighborhood sponsors a number of outside festivals, starting off with the Hop block party. The gay and lesbian community is particularly strong in this trendy area of San Diego. With abundant bus and trolley service together with the compact retail area, it is easy to get along without a car.
