Tips For Budgeting - An Intro

Do you make a personal budget for yourself and your family? Most of us don’t have one and as a result we end up spending quite a bit of cash on things we don’t really enjoy all that much. Plus not knowing how much money we really have at our disposal each month is one of the main reasons we end up with so much credit card debt.

Setting up a budget isn’t very hard and there are a lot of good tips for creating a family budget available online. Not only do they make setting up your family budget easy, but also help you tweak your spending to make sure you don’t have more money going out than you have coming in. Ideally you will end up with some extra savings that will allow you to buy that big flat screen tv, go on that dream vacation or finally buy that new house or car. Believe me, the family budget is a powerful tool to help you reach all your financial goals.

Let’s start with how to make a family budget. This can be as simple as getting out a notebook and jotting down what you bring home each month in one column and then create another one for the money you spend. Start with fixed expenses like your mortgage, car payments etc. and then work on adding every single other expense you have each month from the cable bill and the food you buy to that daily trip to the taco stand and the monthly date night. Then just add each column up to see if you are indeed only spending as much as you are making. Tweak your expenses as needed.

One of the places that gives us the most wiggle room in our budget is the food. Here are some family food budgeting rules. Start by simply collecting all the grocery bills for a few weeks and see where you are spending a lot of money. Make a note of any foods you end up throwing out because you didn’t have a chance to eat them before they went bad. Keep an eye on convenience foods and eating out (or having food delivered) as well.

Making just a few small changes can get you on the right track with your budget and thus your family finances. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to see how much more money you actually have available each month, once you spend a little time seeing where you may be wasting money – and of course putting a stop to that action. Use that money to pay off your credit card, treat your family to a nice dinner or go on vacation. It’s up to you, but you’ll be one step closer to the life you’ve always dreamed off.
